There are a\nmyriad of detrimental pollutants, from pesticides, destructive chemicals, atomic\nwaste and then there is ASBESTOS<\/b><\/i>. Asbestos<\/b><\/i> comes\nfrom the Greek word meaning \u201enot extinguishable\u201d.<\/span><\/font>\n <\/td>\n<\/tr>\n

\nAsbestos<\/span><\/b><\/i><\/font>\nis most lethal when it is broken or crumbled or disposed of. When it falls apart\nor is damaged, it causes the fibers to be released into the air, carried many\nmiles by the wind and human beings can easily inhale the deadly fibers which get\nlodged in the lungs. Activities like sawing, scraping, sanding, or as a matter\nof fact any kind of handling asbestos creates a dreadful health hazard.<\/font><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n

\nSince the conversion plant <\/font>\nStandard Energy<\/font><\/b>\nguarantees the proper recycling of the <\/font>\nasbestos<\/span><\/b><\/i><\/font>\ncontaminated material, the local authorities (Landesgesellschaft f\u00fcr\nSonderabfallentsorgung) have to confirm that all <\/font>\nasbestos<\/span><\/b><\/i><\/font>\ncontaminated material of that region must be recycled in the designated plant,\nwhich would be <\/font>\n\nStandard Energy<\/font><\/b>.\nEach country has its own rules and regulations. Different amounts of <\/font>\nasbestos<\/span><\/b><\/i><\/font>\nhave been implemented. It is a dilemma that needs to be addressed. Some\ncountries hardly have designated waste sites and the population is not aware of\nthe dangers that <\/font>\nasbestos <\/span><\/b><\/i><\/font>brings. There are\nonly landfills which specialize in accepting <\/font>\nasbestos<\/span><\/b><\/i><\/font>\ncontaminated material and the lack of waste sites causes immense hindrance in\ndisposing the waste without causing great environmental damage and huge\nfinancial burdens for all countries, for example\nItaly, Netherlands, Poland and other countries.<\/font><\/font><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n

\n\u201eInextinguishable; grayish\nmineral; a silicate of calcium and magnesium, which occurs in long, threadlike\nfibers. It is incombustible and a  nonconductor of electricity, used as\nfireproofing material for buildings,  safes, for roofing and flooring\nmaterial, for packing, steam joints and pistons.\u201c<\/span><\/font><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n

This actually means that\nasbestos<\/b><\/i> is a naturally occurring mineral\nfiber with high tensile strength. Asbestos <\/b><\/i>fibers can be woven and\nare resistant to many chemicals and to fire. Asbestos<\/b><\/i> is a fibrous\nform of mineral silicates belonging to the serpentine and amphibole groups of\nrock forming minerals. The widely used asbestos<\/b><\/i> types are, for\nexample: <\/span><\/font><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n

Chrysotile<\/b> (white\nasbestos<\/b><\/i>) a product of serpentine rock, its fibers are curled,\nwhich isn\u2019t the case in the other types.\n<\/font>Amosite<\/b> (brown\/or grey asbestos<\/b><\/i>) with\nstraight, brittle fibers, found in large quantities in South Africa.\n<\/font>Crocidolite<\/b> (blue asbestos<\/b><\/i>), a part\nof the amphibole group, mostly made of sodium iron magnesium silicate.\n<\/font>Actinolite<\/b> derives out of metamorphic rocks (it is\nof hard fibers, less likely to be inhaled than the soft fibers) is the least\nexploited form of asbestos<\/b><\/i>, utilized sometimes for jewelry.\n<\/font>Anthophyllite<\/b> is really chains of crystals, created\nduring the breakdown of the mineral talc. Asbestos<\/b> has been\nused for centuries around the world. Due to the variety of positive attributes\nand its inexpensive application, it has been used during the last 100 years for\na wide range of manufactured goods, fire retardant coatings, concrete, bricks,\npipes and fireplace cement; heat, fire and acid resistant gaskets, pipe and\nceiling insulation (mostly amosite), fireproof drywall, flooring, lawn furniture,\nroofing shingles, floor tiles, paper and cement products to provide heat\ninsulation due to its fire resistance qualities; coatings and friction products\nsuch as for automobile clutches, brake and transmission parts. In the textile\nindustry asbestos<\/b><\/i> strands extracted from the rocks (mostly\nchrysotile, due to its flexibility) were woven and spun much like cotton or\nother fabrics. The list of where and in what asbestos<\/b><\/i> has been\nused is incredibly extensive.<\/font><\/span><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n

\n\n\nThe Problem with Asbestos Waste - The amount that has been implemented<\/i><\/span><\/b><\/font><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n

\nAlone in Germany between 1950\nand 1999, almost six million tons of pure asbestos<\/b><\/i> were used. The\nmain product being asbestos<\/b><\/i> concrete (called Eternit in Europe),\nwhich contains 13 \u2013 16% pure asbestos<\/b><\/i>, the remainder is concrete.\nWhen you multiply the lowest dilution factor of 1:5, you can calculate an amount\nof 28 million\/t of asbestos<\/b><\/i> cement.<\/span><\/font><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n

\nAll the asbestos waste must be\ndisposed of in specially designated\nwaste sites or landfills, not a permanent solution. The EU is unwillingly\ntolerating this situation until a better solution is found and presented.<\/span><\/font><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n

\nThe European Union\u2019s directive\n1999\/77\/EC, bans the placing of asbestos<\/b><\/i> on the market and use of\nproducts containing asbestos<\/b><\/i> with effect from 2005. The 2003\/18\/EC\ndirective prohibits all activities in which workers are exposed to \nasbestos<\/b><\/i> fibers in asbestos<\/b><\/i> extraction or production\/industrial\nprocessing of asbestos <\/b><\/i>products, with effect from 2006. This of\ncourse makes it essential that contaminated waste needs to be recycled according\n<\/font><\/span>\n\nStandard Energy<\/font><\/b>\nstandards<\/b>.<\/font><\/span><\/font><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
